Design Spotting: Urban Rustic

Posted on by Melissa

Have you ever felt an overwhelming urge to jazz up your space by scattering old, rusty farm tools hither and thither? Or perhaps you’ve been tempted to use pails and mason jars for purposes unintended.

If so, you may just be under the sway of that paradoxical trend known as “urban rustic” — the a decor term at root promises an idealized urban, yet rustic life, inhabited by organic shapes, antiquated farm machinery and above all — lots of wood.

Off to look for the perfect finds for a sort of NYC high rise meets Iceland farmhouse lifestyle, we headed to that bastion of idealized life accoutrements — ABC Home.

Something Rust-y… a key urban rustic piece is something metal, and ideally something rusty. We spotted this falling geometric wall art with shapes that are simultaneously clean and modern with made of what appears to be rusty iron — lending this a serious vintage edge.

If a wall dedicated to chain art is a bit too grim, take a more subtle approach — pair a rough wood table with these rustic/industrial metal chairs.

Something handmade…perfectly symmetrical, commercially produced dinnerware simply won’t do in the urban rustic household. Instead, try these delightful Jan Burtz handmade dishes — imperfect and with a visible seam.

Something wood! Wood is a critical element of a properly urban rustic space. This dresser, snapped at ABC Home, is no joke – made from reclaimed wood. The handles hint at a sort of aged character but aren’t heavy-handed about it.

Something elegant… Rustic … elegant? Seems paradoxical but when the trend itself is a paradox, you just heap one more on and world goes on. Chandeliers — especially of the artful, organic kind (even better if they look like you could have made them yourself), are a key element to any elegant urban rustic home.

Urban Rustic or Industrial Chic?
We’re a bit on the fence about our last find. While we love it, we think this might actually be industrial chic/retro, not urban rustic. In any case, this distressed leather aviator chair comes with an aluminum outer finish and exposed screws that was inspired by World War II fighter planes (Yes, we had to talk to the sales associate about his one). Whatever it is, it’s simply gorgeous!
