Matt Bernson footwear has been a staple in the accessories market for years. You may even own a pair as Bernson has designed ranges for Urban Outfitters and Madewell to name a few. Earlier this month, he opened his first freestanding store in New York.

The space is long and flooded with light featuring a wall of neon loafers, cork wedges and strappy leather summer sandals. An atrium window in the back looks over the showroom downstairs and this combination of both shop and showroom is perfectly balanced in the renovated 1820s carriage house.

Flexible caramel leather flats are a go to item. Two Tribeca moms were purchasing these when we visited. Cone shaped heels and wedges are combined with blossom pink leather straps. The gladiator sandal is featured in a number of skins and colors. Hardware is kept minimal but still appears as decorative.

The shop boasts dozens of women’s flats, heels, platforms and sandals, footwear that is well designed, comfortable and absolutely affordable as well as a small range of men’s shoes, woven beach bags and quirky jewelry by Dannijo. Vintage sunglasses from the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior and Persol are featured as well. There is a small apothecary section showcasing body oils by Jiva Apoha.
